The collection consists of the papers of John C. Ballintine from 1850-1864. It is primarily correspondence from siblings, friends, and relations during the Civil War mainly while he was being held as a prisoner of war in Annapolis, Maryland. The collection also contains an U.S. Infantry Tactics book (1862) and an enrollment list containing the name, age, occupation, and nationality of persons liable to military duty in the town of Chili, Monroe County, New York (1863). Also includes material belonging to Elliot C. Ballintine including artifacts relating to his Spanish American War service; a souvenir book of the 3rd Regiment U.S. Volunteer Engineers from Camp Fornanie, Macon, Georgia. (1898); a notebook containing maps, notations about terrain, water, etc.; and a photograph of Elliot.
